About

David ColeDavid Cole, AIA, NCARB

In more than a decade of professional experience, David Cole has been responsible for daily design and production on a wide variety of project types in a diverse range of settings, ranging from small residential renovation projects in historic neighborhoods to multimillion-dollar civic, institutional, and corporate projects in major cities across the country. His experience includes tenures at a variety of venerable architecture firms in Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles, including three laureates of the national AIA Firm Award.

David strongly believes in a collaborative design process in which the client and end users play a critical role, and that architecture of lasting quality is not merely a static object to be admired or a product to be commodified, but is designed with the human experience at its core. Throughout his career, David has striven to create built environments that serve the needs of their users and the public while being honest in structure and materials, responsive to human needs and aspirations, and sustainable in the broadest sense of the term.

David began his formal architectural studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1995, completing introductory design studios and general education requirements while employed part-time at the Chicago office of Perkins+Will. After several years of employment at leading firms in Philadelphia and New York, he returned to Chicago and completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in 2010 at DePaul University’s School for New Learning, a self-directed program for nontraditional adult students, while working full-time at Mekus Tanager in Chicago and Dattner Architects in New York.

David earned his professional Master of Architecture degree in 2014 at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning while alternating semesters between full-time studies on campus and full-time co-op placements at Moore Ruble Yudell, STUDIOS Architecture, and local firms in Cincinnati. Consistently ranked as one of the world’s top design schools, the University of Cincinnati embraces a hands-on “learn by doing” ethos that David has practiced throughout his career.

When not involved with professional practice, David enjoys reading about history and geography, being involved in the community, listening to electronic music, sampling craft cocktails at his favorite tiki bars, and exploring new places from the side streets of London to the mountains of the Pacific Northwest.

David is a registered architect in the states of Washington and Ohio, holds certification from the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, and is a member of the American Institute of Architects.
